Home NSS Cell
National Service Scheme, popularly known as NSS, was launched in Mahatma Gandhi’s Birth Centenary Year 1969, under the aegis of Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports, Government of India. The scheme was launched simultaneously in 37 Universities involving 40,000 students with primary focus on the development of personality of students through community service and promotion of National solidarity in India. The first duty of the students should be, not just to treat their period of study as one of the opportunities for indulgence in intellectual luxury, but for preparing themselves for final dedication in the service of those who provided the sinews of the nation with national goods and services, so essential to the society. NSS works on the premise that it is possible to awaken the villagers and slum dwellers to their responsibilities and develop confidence in them to tackle their common problems with energy, enthusiasm and in a co-operative spirit, based on mutual aid and self-reliance. The role of students is multifarious, they are activists, enablers, catalytic agents with the wider community and as programming aids.
